A Comitiva
Quarter Horse: The King of Horses
"His blast raises the winds, and makes the ground his storm, as he raises the dust with the power of his hoof, and flies across the arena like an unquenchable fire"
The Quarter Horse is perhaps the most popular and versatile breed in the world, having its origin in the wild mustangs, known for their strength and durability, and also in the famous English thoroughbreds, world-renowned and exercised racehorses, which would be better then a cross between the mighty ruminant of the American plains and the sprinting nobles of the British bourgeoisie?
With this movie-worthy origin, the Quarter Horse came into the world to show that it's not here to lose, I also conclude, the Quarter Horse came into this world to fully show its capacity and versatility.
I could observe acquaintances of mine in international contacts saying phrases like: "Here goes another hot blooded bay", and indeed, the equestrian market is variable and also at the same time stable, we can observe how the German and European equestrian market has all those " Warmbloods" for jumping and dressage, making the German market focused on equestrian examples, as we can see the different regions of the country making their efforts to establish their Warmblood breed.
But that's why I say, the equestrian market is as variable as it is stable, we can observe the fame of European and German equestrianism, as much as we can observe the characteristics of the market for Brazilian gaited animals, the English and Irish race marathoners, as well as the popularity of draft horses in smaller regions.
My point with this whole explanation is, but what about the Quarter Horse? if we don't usually see him in the show jumping, if he isn't gaited, and also if he can't run a marathon, what makes the Quarter Horse so special for me?
Just look at it from another angle, in the beginning the Quarter Horse was mainly a racehorse like its Thoroughbred predecessors, only over shorter distances, but the Americans did not fail to see a new function in this breed, which is also very involved in the main activities of the region.
Cattle and Explosion:
Now we're going to take a look at what makes the Quarter Horse a king, I'll summarize this feat as in the subtitle: "Cattle and explosion", but what do I mean by cattle and explosion? well, this was the niche and main activity where the Quarter Horse reached its dominance over the other horses, as previously informed, we didn't find many Quarter Horses in English Riding (Equestrianism) or in other areas of the horse, but we we have a certain area where this breed takes it all.
Western riding: where do we see the Quarter Horse? you say the place, rodeos, the international reins competitions? a Regional Barrel Competition? it is enough to look at these places that it is very easy to see the power and superiority of the breed.
The Barrel Racing is considered the gold test of the Quarter Horse, as the discipline requires mainly speed and control, the concept of the Barrel Racing discpline is simple, but it takes practice from the rider and the horse to win, and the fastest QM wins.
However, it is not only in Barrel Racing that the Quarter Horse shines, we can also observe the definition of the breed in several events, such as Reins, Roping, Cutting, Vaquejada, you name the western riding event, I name the Quarter Horse participating in it.
Swapping genetics:
The greatest proof of the versatility of the Quarter Horse is when we take a look at the genetics and the breeding market of the breed, in many other styles of riding, when we look for a new horse or a new lineage for a certain function, we choose animals of different breed for possible positive results, when intercalating disciplines.
When we are talking about the Quarter Horse breeding market, it is common to see the exchange of the breed genetics, a great example of my point is the use of the stallion Apollo VM, a Quarter Horse racing stallion, which many times it is used to produce animals suitable for other disciplines, similar or different, such as using a racing stallion to produce an animal for Barrel Racing, or even for Vaquejada.
For this reason, the Quarter Horse can be seen as a very dominant breed in the market in which it operates, overcoming barriers that other breeds in other disciplines lose when competing with animals that have another registration, a German Holsteiner horse for example, has to compete with an animal of the Hanoverian breed in its main market, but in the western style, where the king operates, we do not see this type of competition, in fact we see the opposite, we see a racing stallion like the Apollo VM operating in the reproduction of animals for vaquejada , a modality different from the initial one.
Final Thoughts And Thanks:
I would like to say that I am very happy with this first report, making it clear that I have no training in the area, and I am only here to express my opinion on the subject that I love the most which is horses, while I do this I hope to pass on the least amount of misinformation possible, even though this is an amateur and free work, I would really like to avoid passing on any kind of misinformation about the subject, I would also like to say that I am interested in all types of horses and I am not a fanatic of the Quarter Horse, I just feel brilliant to see the success of the breed in its niche, from today I will post about other breeds and subjects that I'm interested and I'll try to be as efficient as possible for myself, a hug to everyone reading this and I apologize if this first post has a lower quality than I expected, I'm just having fun :)
